What Is It?

The Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing Hip System is a very popular implant system for many individuals that are undergoing this type of surgical intervention.  As with most resurfacing techniques, the Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing system also focuses on conserving the natural ball-and-socket joint of the hip.  The femoral head and femoral neck are preserved during this resurfacing process.  The implant system offers superior stability to the actual hip joint, because the cap for the femoral head and the metal component that creates the socket portion of the hip joint are much larger than other types of implants.  This creates a more natural, anatomic hip joint which is essential to proper movement.

Advantages

There are many advantages to this type of resurfacing system.  Each implant system has two components.  The first component is a metal piece that makes up the ball portion of the hip joint.  The second component is also metal and makes up the socket portion of the hip joint.  The advantage to the Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing Hip System is that the socket portion of the hip joint has a cobalt chrome finish.  This resurfacing system also creates an increased range of motion within the actual hip joint.  It has been thought to actually increase the hip joint’s range of motion by 10 degrees; as compared to other hip replacement implants.  The metal component that makes up the ball portion of the ball-and-socket joint is also made of cobalt chrome; which provides for a great rotatory movement between the femoral head and the acetabulum of the pelvis.  This movement can actually help the hip joint last longer than other implant systems available.  The femoral heads are much larger than other competing implant systems.  For example, the average artificial femoral head size used in hip replacements ranges from 28 millimeters.  The average artificial femoral head size used in the Conserve Plus Total Resurfacing Hip System is between 36 mm to 55 mm.  That is a significant difference in the size of the ball portion of the ball-and-socket hip joint.  It offers great benefits and increases longevity of the implant as compared to other implants.  This implant has also been shown to significantly increase the hip joints range of motion as compared to other implant systems.  There is less chance of dislocation because of the larger femoral head caps.
