Recovery from Hip Surgery
When a patient is contemplating undergoing hip replacement surgery, it can be a very overwhelming time in their life. During this time, it is imperative that the patient become educated on the specific procedure and technique that will be used for their individual surgical case. It is also imperative to consult with a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon in order to learn the risks and the benefits associated with this surgical procedure. Once the decision has been made to undergo this surgical procedure, the next step is to discuss the post-operative recovery care.
Post-Operative
Immediately after the surgical procedure, the patient will be moved to the recovery room where he/she will be monitored for a few hours. The patient will then be moved to the floor of the hospital, where they will be monitored by the nursing and physician staffs. Depending on the surgical technique used, the patient may stay up to four days in the hospital after the surgery. After surgery it is going to be imperative to begin physical therapy. The physical therapist will work with the patient while he/she is in the hospital. The physical therapist will help the patient perform very minor exercises to help strengthen the muscles. However, it is imperative to make sure the hip joint does not undergo movement; as that could result in a possible dislocation. Antibiotics and pain medications will be given to make sure the patient avoids infection and remains without pain. The patient is then discharged to their home and recovery should continue.

Discharge
When the patient is discharged to their home, it is imperative that there is family or friend support to help with the post-hospital care. There are nurses and physical therapists that can actually come to the patient’s home to help them continue their exercises. After the surgical procedure, the patient will have to care for their wound incision. Depending on the method of closure of the incision, the patient may notice that there are either sutures or staples. Whichever type is present, it is imperative when the patient follows-up with the surgeon that those be removed with 14 days.
Physical Therapy/Physical Activity
Physical activity is imperative to getting back to an active lifestyle. It does take time; and should not be rushed. However, most patients are able to return to normal physical activity with approximately 6 weeks. Continued physical therapy is key so that increased mobility can be attained. As more time passes since the procedure, the activities will become more strenuous. The patient will learn to walk and bare weight on their new hip. During this time, the patient may have to use a walker, cane or crutches as a means to increase mobility. It is imperative that the patient avoids using stairs until cleared by their physician.
Next Steps
The Orthopedic Surgeon will wish to follow-up with the patient after the surgery. Please speak with your healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate steps in your individual case. Undergoing a hip replacement surgery can be overwhelming; but with the appropriate information and guidance, it can allow for you to take your life back. Don’t hesitate, contact your Orthopedic Surgeon today.
