Anatomy

In order to better understand this process, it is imperative we understand the anatomy of the hip joint.  The hip joint is a ball-and-socket, synovial joint that allows for movement of the lower extremities.  The hip joint is composed of two main parts.  The first component is the head of the femur.  The second component is the acetabulum of the pelvis.  The femoral head of the femur articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvis creating the ball-and-socket hip joint.  There is cartilage within this articulation that allows for fluid movement of the joint.  During a total hip replacement surgery, the femoral head and the acetabulum are replaced with artificial components.  Some components are metal-on-metal while other implant systems vary in their composition.  The artificial hip joint, acts as the anatomic joint would; and allows the patient to retain fluid movement.

Hip Dislocation

Infection

A third reason that patients may need a revision hip replacement surgery is because of infection.  Infection is a risk because the components that make up the hip joint are artificial.  The immune system recognizes those materials as foreign and may attack the areas.  This can sometimes result in a significant bone infection.  Risk of infection is highest within the first 6 weeks post-surgery.  As long as the antibiotics are taken and the instructions from the surgeon are followed, it is less likely that an infection will occur.  However, sometimes infections still occur and the need for the surgeon to either clean the area or exchange the hip components may be necessary.
