Hip Implants – Design and Construction

Hip implants have been used for years as a means to replaced worn-out, degenerated hip joints.  This surgical procedure has proven to reduce pain, increase activity, and allow the patient to take back their life.  Understanding the different components that make up the actual hip implant system, can be very useful when determining which surgical technique will be the most appropriate for the patient’s unique case.  Let’s take a look at the anatomy of the hip joint to further understand the design and construction of the hip implant system.

Anatomy

The hip joint is the largest ball-and-socket joint in the body.  The hip joint is composed of two main parts:  the ball portion and the socket portion.  The ball portion of the ball-and-socket joint is the femoral head of the femur.  The socket portion of the ball-and-socket joint is the acetabulum of the pelvis.  The head of the femur articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvis to create the durable, movable ball-and-socket hip joint.  The joint is very strong; however, with normal wear and tear or other hip pathologies the hip joint can become degenerated.  Degeneration of the hip joint can result in excruciating pain and that is one of the major reasons patients undergo hip replacement surgery.  The degenerated hip joint is then replaced with an artificial system that provides the functionality of the anatomic hip joint.  The goal of the hip implant is to provide the patient with the function that the anatomic joint provided.

Implant Design

There are many different hip implant systems that have been designed over the years.  Materials ranging from polyethylene, metal, and ceramic have been used to create durable implants that will increase longevity of the artificial joint.  Let’s evaluate the design of the hip implant system.  Determining on the surgical procedure used by the Orthopedic Surgeon, the components may vary.  However, generally the components will contain either two or three moving parts.  The first system is the implant system used in many total hip replacements.  The implant system will consist of three moving parts.  The first part is the femoral stem.  The stem is inserted into the femur to provide stability.  The second component is the ball portion of the ball-and-socket joint.  The ball portion replaces the anatomic femoral head.  The third component is a cap that will replace the socket portion of the ball-and-socket joint.  The cap will create the new acetabulum of the pelvis.  In some instances the stem is connected to the artificial ball that replaces the femoral head.  In other instances the implant system only contains two parts:  the acetabulum cap and the artificial femoral head that makes up the ball portion of the hip joint.

Implant Construction

The implant construction is also important when determining the surgical procedure that will provide the most benefits for the patient.  There are different materials used by different manufacturers.  Some of those materials include:  polyethylene, ceramic, and metal.  The most common material used for the artificial femoral head and stem is metal material.  The acetabular cap can be made any of the following:  ceramic, metal or polyethylene.  These materials offer great benefits in that they do not result in any type of rejection reaction.  These materials are also very durable; and that results in the increase longevity of the artificial hip joint.  The materials also allow for fluid movement of the joint; providing the patient with movement that mimics their anatomic joint.

Next Steps

It is imperative that you discuss all your options with your Orthopedic Surgeon, so that the best implant system can be chosen for your unique case.  Don’t hesitate to ask questions regarding the surgical procedure.  These questions are important to help the patient understand the different types of implant systems before undergoing such an invasive procedure.
