Mesothelioma Statistics

Roughly 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the United States each year. Although this form of cancer is relatively rare, many people who contract the condition will not survive. Each year, approximately 2,500 people die from mesothelioma.

From 1999 to 2013, there have been over 37,000 deaths associated with mesothelioma in the United States. Unfortunately, the number of deaths due to mesothelioma has risen overall by about 10 percent since 1999, but the rates in the United States have gradually been decreasing since about the 1990s.

Attributes of Those Who Have Developed Mesothelioma

According to some studies, there are approximately 20 million people in the United States who are at risk of developing mesothelioma. Most of these individuals are put at risk because of exposure to asbestos. In fact, roughly 80 percent of all mesothelioma cases can be attributed to some asbestos contact.

It can be difficult to tell when asbestos will cause mesothelioma because the condition often does not become diagnosable until 20 or even 50 years after exposure. Women seem to have longer latency periods as well.

Most people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma are over the age of 55. It is more common in whites and Hispanics/Latinos compared to Asian Americans or African Americans.

Mesothelioma Statistics: Survival Rates

Early detection is important and can increase the odds of surviving this life-threatening form of cancer. The five-year survival rate for mesothelioma is relatively low. Only between five and ten percent of those diagnosed will survive over five years after diagnosis.

The survival rate will depend on the stage in which mesothelioma is detected and diagnosed. It will also vary depending on the individual’s age, sex, and overall health.

Stage I mesothelioma is the least serious, and it means that the treating physician or doctor found a tumor in the pleura lining or the lungs, but it has not spread to the lymph nodes. Those who are diagnosed with Stage I mesothelioma have an average survival timeframe of 21 months.

Stage II means that the cancer has not spread much from its original location, but it has spread some. You still have the option to seek out curative treatment at this stage. Survival timeframes for Stage II mesothelioma are, on average, 19 months.

In Stage III, cancer cells have spread to the closer lymph nodes, but they have not yet spread to the other lung, other organs, or farther away lymph nodes. The survival timeframe for Stage III is about 16 months. Stage III is often considered the most common diagnosis stage

Finally, in Stage IV mesothelioma, the survival timeframe is generally about 12 months. In Stage IV, the cancer has spread to the other lung, both lymph nodes, prostate, brain, spine, or the lining of the heart. Gradually, the cancer can spread throughout the body. Stage IV mesothelioma often cannot be cured.
