Texas Xarelto Stroke Lawsuit
Xarelto
Xarelto is used to help prevent and treat blood clots. It is an anticoagulant or blood thinner. Blood thinners decrease the risk that a blood clot will develop in another part of the body reach vital organs and cause damage or death.
Xarelto is most often prescribed after hip or knee surgery, when there is an increase in the potential occurrence of blood clots. It has also been prescribed for those who have an irregular heartbeat to help decrease the risk of stroke.
Xarelto is also specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It was fast-tracked through the traditional FDA approval process.
Common Side Effects of Xarelto
Xarelto does have some unique side effects, but most of the common side effects are shared with other similar types of blood thinners. These side effects may include:
- Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, increased bleeding from small cuts, etc.)
- Easy bruising
- Headache
- Back pain
- Dizziness
- Itching
- Muscle pain
- Numbness and tingling in the muscles
- Pain in the limbs
Serious Side Effects Associated with Xarelto
Xarelto is also associated with major bleeding events, which can result in severe and life-threatening complications. Bleeding events are especially concerning because there is no antidote to treat excessive bleeding for those who have taken Xarelto. This is unlike other blood thinning products on the market today. Although they are attempting to create an antidote to combat bleeding events, no cure has been developed as of yet.
Blood loss can also result in major long-term damage, including organ malfunction and failure and even death. Potentially serious side effects include:
- Bleeding in the brain
- Bleeding from the rectum
- Hemorrhaging
- Intestinal or abdominal believes
- Bladder or bowel dysfunction
- Abnormal liver function
- Loss of the ability control movement
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
If you experience signs of any bleeding event, you should seek medical attention immediately. For example, if you cough up blood or notice bright red or black stools, you should head to the doctor.
Xarelto has also been associated with increased occurrence of wound infections or other complications following hip or knee surgery. In fact, one study conducted in Britain in 2012 indicated that those who took Xarelto after surgery had a high return-to-surgery rate within 30 days after the initial surgery.
Xarelto has a black box warning from the FDA, the most severe warning that the FDA provides. The warning indicates higher risks of the bleeding. It also indicates that there is an increased risk of blood clots in the spine following a spinal tap or after receiving spinal anesthesia (epidural). Those with spinal defects or a spinal catheter in place should not use Xarelto. Mixing Xarelto with other types of inhibitors is also not advised. The FDA has also included a warning that indicates there is insufficient testing on Xarelto’s effects on those who have heart valves.
